Great British Energy Delivers First Solar Projects for UK Schools and NHS

In a landmark effort to cut soaring public-sector energy costs and accelerate Britain’s transition to clean power, Great British Energy—backed by the Department for Energy Security & Net Zero—has begun delivering its first major project: installing rooftop solar panels across schools and NHS sites.
 
When the initiative was announced in March 2025, the government committed £200 million in funding, with £80 million set aside for around 200 schools and £100 million for a similar number of NHS facilities. Together, these investments are expected to generate as much as £400 million in lifetime savings, reducing energy costs for vital public services while supporting national decarbonisation goals.

First Solar Installations Now Complete

By June 2025, the first 11 schools had already completed solar panel installations. Collectively, these schools are projected to save around £175,000 every year, with individual systems ranging from modest rooftop setups to large-scale installations generating tens of thousands of pounds in annual savings.
 
The rollout has continued throughout the year, and the government has confirmed that all participating schools and hospitals will be equipped with solar by the end of 2025. This steady progress demonstrates how the programme is delivering results on the ground, providing immediate financial relief while setting a precedent for wider adoption of renewables across the public sector.

How Are Schools and Hospitals Selected?

Unlike many grant schemes, schools do not need to apply for this funding. Instead, the Department for Education (DfE) identifies schools to take part, prioritising those in economically disadvantaged regions such as the North East, North West, and West Midlands. Delivery is coordinated with LocatED and other DfE partners, ensuring the process is managed efficiently and fairly.
 
For hospitals, NHS Trusts were invited to submit expressions of interest earlier in the year, with sites selected on the basis of need and suitability. This targeted approach ensures that the benefits reach the institutions most in need without requiring lengthy applications or diverting resources away from core services.

  • Salix Finance – Offering interest-free loans for energy efficiency and renewable projects.
