England Records Its Driest July on Record

After weeks of unusually hot, dry weather, England has officially recorded its driest July since records began. Just 6.5mm of rainfall fell across the country during the month – around 10% of the long-term average. The exceptionally dry conditions were most pronounced in southern England, while England and Wales also experienced their sunniest July on record.
The prolonged dry spell has already led several water companies to introduce temporary hosepipe bans, with further restrictions remaining a possibility if conditions continue. While much of the attention has focused on water supplies, agriculture and the environment, the weather has also highlighted the close relationship between climate, infrastructure and the UK’s energy system.

A Changing Climate Brings New Challenges

No single weather event can be attributed solely to climate change. However, scientists have consistently found that climate change is increasing the likelihood and intensity of certain extreme weather events, including prolonged heatwaves and periods of drought. The Met Office has also noted that warmer conditions are becoming increasingly common across the UK.
As events such as the driest July on record become more frequent, organisations and infrastructure operators are having to consider how changing weather patterns may affect long-term planning, operational resilience and resource management.

What Does The Driest July Mean for the Energy Sector?

Although winter remains the UK’s period of highest electricity demand, prolonged hot weather creates its own challenges for the energy sector.
At the same time, extreme weather can affect electricity generation. Many conventional power stations rely on water for cooling, meaning lower river levels and higher water temperatures can reduce operational efficiency. Network equipment can also become less efficient during prolonged periods of high temperatures, requiring careful management to maintain reliability.
There are some positives as well. Longer, sunnier days can significantly increase solar generation, helping to meet higher daytime demand and demonstrating the growing role renewable technologies play within the UK’s energy mix. However, balancing supply and demand becomes increasingly important as weather conditions become more variable.

The Link Between Water and Energy

The introduction of hosepipe bans has drawn attention to the pressure drought places on water resources, but water and energy are closely connected. The water sector is a major consumer of electricity, with significant energy required to treat, pump and distribute clean water, as well as process wastewater. Equally, many forms of electricity generation rely on secure water supplies to operate efficiently.
When prolonged dry conditions affect one part of this relationship, there can be wider implications across both sectors. As weather patterns become less predictable, managing water and energy resources together is likely to become increasingly important.
Record-breaking weather naturally raises questions about what future summers may look like. While no single event defines a long-term trend, the UK’s energy infrastructure is likely to experience increasing exposure to periods of extreme heat alongside more traditional winter demand pressures.
For organisations, this reinforces the value of understanding energy consumption, improving efficiency and monitoring how changing environmental conditions may influence operations. These measures can help reduce costs while supporting resilience as weather patterns continue to evolve.
As this summer has demonstrated, droughts and heatwaves are not only environmental concerns. They also have practical implications for energy systems, infrastructure and the organisations that rely on them every day.
